Scheduled Maintenance

Network Maintenance | BRC Router Upgrade Jan 6, 2026 06:00-08:00 CST

Network Services will be upgrading one of the BRC routers to address an issue we have been seeing that causes high memory utilization in these units. Some BAS equipment will see a short period where it will lose network connectivity but will reconnect after the upgrade. All other network connections may experience latency as traffic moves between the affected hardware and its redundant counterpart. Notice will be sent out after completion.

Machines that have been vulnerable for 60+ days will be quarantined from the Rice network.

Update - Campus wireless networking has returned to service. The majority of wireless access points (APs) have successfully reconnected. We are investigating a few APs that are still offline, likely due to their connection cycle.

Update - The routers that support wireless networking will require additional steps to complete the upgrade. There will be an approximate 20 minute disruption to wireless networking at 7:00 a.m. We will share another update when this portion of the work is complete.

Scheduled - Network Services will be upgrading the campus network routers to address an issue we have been seeing that causes high memory utilization in these units. These routers are redundant and we will be working on one at a time. No downtime is expected as part of this maintenance. There may be brief network latency as traffic moves between the affected hardware and its redundant counterpart.

Update - We have identified several access points that did not return to service with the reboot, but we are manually addressing each access point individually, and they are recovering.

Scheduled - Network Services will replace the access layer switch in Dell Butcher Hall (3rd Floor).
During the scheduled maintenance window, users located in the Northeast section of the 3rd and 4th floors will experience service interruptions. Both wired and wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity will be intermittent or unavailable while this work is being completed.
