We are migrating the central campus file shares file-storage.rice.edu and file-servers.rice.edu to another storage platform. During this window, we will be updating the network configuration (DNS) to route connections to the new storage infrastructure. Access to these network folders will be unavailable during the two-hour maintenance window while the update takes effect and active connections are safely transferred.
To prevent data loss or frozen applications, please take these steps before the maintenance begins: - Close all open files, documents, and applications that run directly off these network drives. - Disconnect from the file shares or close your computer to ensure a clean disconnection.
While connections should restore automatically for most users, you may need to manually refresh your connection once the upgrade is complete.
Windows Users: If your network folder or drive is unresponsive or shows an error, log out of Windows and log back in, or restart your computer.
Mac Users: If your connection drops, completely disconnect from the network folder and then reconnect to the campus file share.
Linux Workstations: If your mount becomes unresponsive or "stale," perform a standard unmount/remount or restart your system to clear the connection cache.
If you cannot access your files and the steps above do not resolve the issue, please contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.
